ot tapping refers to the installation of connections and associated fittings to pipelines while they remain in service and or under pressure, minimising the impact on and the potential costly requirement to shut down existing services.

Hot tapping is generally used to repair areas that have suffered damage or corrosion, or to add fittings for system modifications.

This means that a pipe or tank can continue to be in operation whilst maintenance or modifications are being done to it. The process is also used to drain off pressurized casing fluids,add test points or various sensors such as temperature and pressure. Hot taps can range from a ½ inch hole designed for something as simple as quality control testing, up to a 48 inch tap for the installation of a variety of ports, valves, t-sections or other pipes.

Hot tapping is also the first procedure in line stopping, where a hole saw is used to make an opening in the pipe, so a line plugging head can be inserted.

At the existing pipeline, fitting and valve is installed.

Install Hottap machine.

Perform Hottap through the open valve.

Retract Cutter assembly, a special device retains the "coupon", removed during Hottap operation.

Close Hottaping valve.

Remove Hot Tap Machine to allow connection for Line Stop machine.

Line Stop equipment installed on the temporary tapping valve.

The Valve is open.

Line Stop head enters pipeline through the Hot connection.

Temporary seal is achieved and pipeline ˜flow is stopped.

Temporary valve is closed and the Line Stop equipment is removed.

Completion Plug and Tapping machine are installed.

Temporary tapping valve is opened and the completion Plug is put into position.

Temporary tapping valve is opened and the completion Plug is installed locked into position.

Line Stop equipment and temporary tapping valve are removed from the line stop fitting.
